"I guess you could say I had a spending problem. I'm not proud of it, but it was part of how I kept myself going. I'd reward myself when I was feeling down or weak. By telling myself I deserved this or that, it somehow gave me the strength to carry on - particularly after my husband died. Of course, it couldn't go on. I just wasn't making enough money for what I was spending. But I'm also not the type to go bankrupt.

I tried to fix the problem myself. The first time my debts came to a head, I got a consolidation loan. I even looked for a better job so I could earn a little more. But then I had to work harder, too, and I gave myself more gifts because of that. I went to the bank a second time, and they let me borrow again. The third time, they said no, and that's when everything started to get out of hand. That's when it ended.

I found Credit Canada through my brother. He took me there for my first interview. I didn't thank him then, I was too ashamed, but I do thank him now. They really helped me. They made me feel okay. Now I make myself feel better every time I budget my money. I am a better person. The rewards I take now move my life forward.
